Will 'Petta' Success Make Rajani Re-Think Political Foray?

Rajinikanth is back with a bang. His Pongal release Petta is a super-hit and crossed Rs 100 crore worldwide on the first weekend after its release on January 10. Which raises the question whether his on-screen come back will make him have a rethink on his announced entry into politics? This phenomenal success comes as a huge relief since it re-anchors his superstar status. It didn’t help matters that his 2018 release Kaala had received mixed response both from the critics and at the box office. Though his next movie 2.0 was a blockbuster, it was so only outside Tamil Nadu, with the Hindi and Telugu versions. Director Karthik Subbaraj, one of the most promising young directors in Kollywood had said that his aim while making the movie was to “Get Rajinified”. This meant a total turnaround after Rajini's recent films like Kabali and Kaali, made with director Pa. Ranjith, in which Tajani attempted an image change. Petta is concentrated Rajinism with the story revolving around the superstar, and director Karthik have reinvented the Rajini of the '90s, giving back the fans what they wanted. It is reported that the star has already signed his next film with hit-maker AR Murugadoss. The shoot is likely to start in February and it is slated for a Diwali 2019 release. He has also promised to do another film with Karthik. It was on Dec 31, 2017 that Rajini announced that he would float an outfit of his own. He had then declared that he would contest from all the 234 assembly seats in 2021 elections. From the time that Rajini became a Tamil superstar in the early 1990s, there had always been speculation that he would one day throw his hat into the political arena. In fact, a speech he made on the eve of 1996 assembly elections (“Even God can’t save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa returns to power”) is believed to have helped the DMK-TMC coast to power. Ever since, during election time political parties get the jitters on whether Rajini would jump into politics and influence the final result.
